Being Dismissive and Not Listening

I'm sorry I let my ego shut down and refused to really hear you. I know I interrupted, brushed aside what you were trying to say, and acted like my opinion mattered more than how you were feeling. That was wrong. You deserved to be listened to, seen, and respected in that moment, and instead I made you feel dismissed and alone. I take full responsibility for my behavior. There are no excuses for prioritizing my pride over your voice. I understand that when I close off like that it makes you less likely to share, and it damages the trust between us. I hate that I caused you frustration and hurt. I want to do better. When we talk next I will put my phone away, stop myself from interrupting, and practice reflecting back what you say before responding — not to be perfect, but to show I’m actually listening. If you prefer, tell me whether you want me to just listen, to help problem-solve, or to hold space; I will follow that. I’m also going to work on noticing my defensive impulses and taking a breath before reacting. I know apologies mean little without change, so I’m committed to acting differently and earning back your trust. When you feel ready, I’d like to hear how this felt for you and what else would help me make it right. I’m here and I want to listen.
