Not Listening and Missing What You Said

I'm sorry for not really listening and for acting like I didn't understand what you were trying to say. I know that made you feel dismissed and frustrated, and that hurts me because the last thing I want is to make you feel unheard. That was my fault. I didn't give you my full attention, I interrupted, and I didn't follow up to make sure I understood you. Instead of being present, I let distractions and my own impatience get in the way. I take full responsibility for that. I see how it undermines the trust and warmth between us and makes you feel like your feelings don't matter. I want to do better. When we talk from now on I will put my phone away, stop interrupting, and repeat back what I heard to make sure I get it right. If I don't understand something, I'll ask calm, specific questions instead of pretending I do. If you'd like, we can set aside time each week to check in without distractions so I can really hear you. I care about you and our relationship, and I'm committed to changing this behavior. I know apologies mean little without action, so I want to show you through how I behave. When you're ready, I'd like to listen to you now or whenever you want to talk—no pressure, just my full attention.
