An apology

For Being Distant When My Heart Changed

To To my mother,

I was dry with you today, and you felt it. I know that hurt—especially when you deserved better, especially from me. I wasn't trying to be cold; I was trying to be careful. But that's no excuse for pulling away when you were right there.

The truth is, somewhere between our first message and our first date, something shifted in me. I stopped helping and started falling. Every laugh was real. Every time I said I liked you, I meant it—all of it. Those words were mine, even if I borrowed the name to get there. I'm sorry for how I let that confusion make me distant today. You deserved to know what was happening, not to feel the frost.

I'm sorry for being cold. I'm not sorry for how I feel. I needed you to know the difference.
