Making a Unilateral Decision Without You

Dear Ammu,

I made a choice that affects both of us, and I made it alone. I didn't come to you first. I didn't ask what you needed or what you could handle—I just decided, based on my own desperation, and left you to deal with the fallout. That wasn't fair to you, and I know it's hurt you in a way I should have seen coming.

I was scared and backed into a corner, and instead of leaning on you or trusting you with the truth of how stuck I felt, I just acted. I told myself there was no other way, but the real truth is I didn't give us a chance to find one together. I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry for the weight I've put on you and for making you carry the consequences of my choice.

I need to do this differently from here. I can't undo what I've done, but I can stop shutting you out. You deserve to be part of the decisions that change both our lives—not to hear about them after I've already decided. I love you, and that has to mean trusting you, not just telling you I can't live without you while I'm making unilateral choices about our future.
